{"methodology":"# About this data\n\nWhimbrel Research tracks US medtech companies against the public record,\nupdated daily. Every published event carries the URL of the public\nrecord it came from and can be checked in one click. Facts that cannot\nbe verified against a public source are not published. Company\nidentities are deduplicated, so one company is one history.\n\n## Event kinds\n\n- nih_award: NIH SBIR and STTR awards to small businesses, from NIH\n RePORTER. Published only when the award's own text describes a\n medical device, diagnostic instrument, or medical software program;\n NIH small-business awards for drugs, biologics, and basic science\n are collected but not published, because this is a medtech feed.\n- nsf_award: NSF SBIR and STTR awards, from NSF's award search, held\n to the same device-text standard as NIH awards.\n- sbir_award: SBIR and STTR awards from the SBIR.gov public\n no-abstract CSV. HHS/NIH and NSF rows are not ingested; those\n stay nih_award and nsf_award. A row needs a stated Award Amount\n greater than zero, a parseable Proposal Award Date or Date of\n Notification, a required agency_tag, and a title that clears the\n same device-text bar used for NIH/NSF awards. Pharmaceutical and\n injection-only titles fail closed. source_url is the SBIR.gov\n award search page, not the CSV dump. Contract IDs that match a\n federal_contract PIID are skipped. weekly_pulse, latest_signals,\n and find_signals include this kind. who_got_funded returns NIH\n awards.\n- federal_contract: federal medical R&D contracts from USAspending,\n the DoD, DARPA and BARDA money that never appears in the grant\n registries. Bounded to product service code AN (medical R&D) and\n held to the same device-text standard as NIH awards.\n- fda_clearance: FDA 510(k) clearances, from openFDA.\n- fda_pma: FDA premarket approvals, from openFDA.\n- fda_denovo: FDA De Novo grants, first-of-a-kind device\n classifications, from FDA's De Novo database.\n- fda_breakthrough_auth: Breakthrough marketing authorizations\n from FDA's Breakthrough Devices Program table of devices that\n have received marketing authorization. Distinct from\n fda_clearance, fda_denovo, and fda_pma even when the same K,\n DEN, or P number exists. A row that lists more than one\n submission number becomes one signal per number. weekly_pulse,\n latest_signals, and find_signals include this kind.\n company_timeline keeps the company's history. who_got_funded\n returns NIH awards. A Breakthrough marketing authorization is\n not an award and is not in that list. Ask for one full company\n brief on the manufacturer, not once per K, DEN, or P.\n- fda_hde: FDA Humanitarian Device Exemption Original approvals,\n from the CDRH HDE database (supplementtype=HDE Original) with\n the fda.gov HDE listing as assist for indication footnotes and\n company casing. signal_key is hde:{H######}. One signal per\n original HDE. Supplements are out of this kind. weekly_pulse,\n latest_signals, and find_signals include this kind.\n company_timeline keeps the company's history. who_got_funded\n returns NIH awards. An HDE approval is not an award and is not\n in that list. The listing table and the Original search differ\n in count (historical and withdrawn rows on the listing; CBER\n BH* numbers on the search). Applicant can name a successor\n firm. When the listing company cell is address-only, Applicant\n comes from the accessdata detail page. Ask for one full company\n brief on the manufacturer, not once per HDE number.\n- trial_registration: ClinicalTrials.gov device trial registrations,\n industry-sponsored device interventions. The rolling feed and\n weekly pulse show the recent observation window so a multi-year\n archive does not drown those views. company_timeline, find_signals,\n and the complete archive keep full history. who_got_funded returns\n NIH awards. A trial registration is not an award and is not in\n that list.\n\nCompany records served over MCP also carry patent_grant and\npatent_application events from USPTO, funding_filing events from SEC\nForm D and Form C filings, fda_listing events from FDA's registration\nand listing database, fda_recall events from openFDA, fda_warning_letter\nevents from FDA's CDRH warning-letter index, and fda_import_alert\nevents from device-relevant import-alert Red and Yellow lists.\nListings, device recalls, warning letters, import-alert listings, and\nfunding filings stay out of the feed files by design: listings\narrive in registry batch loads that would swamp a windowed feed, a\ndevice recall, CDRH warning letter, or device import-alert listing is\nrisk and compliance context for a company's record, and a Form D\nor Form C is a filing rather than stated money. Those risk kinds appear on\ncompany_timeline, through an opt-in find_signals kind filter, and in\nthe archive. They do not appear in weekly_pulse or who_got_funded.\n\n## People\n\nAn event carries the people the registry itself names in that record,\nand nobody else: principal investigators on an NIH award, the contact\non a 510(k), officers on an SEC filing, officials on a trial\nregistration. Each name is already public in the source the event\nlinks to, and appears here with the role that source states.\n\nWhat is never here: email addresses, phone numbers, titles or\naffiliations that were inferred rather than stated, and anyone the\nrecord does not name. Researched leadership and contact routes are a\ndifferent thing built a different way, and they are not in these\nfiles; they come from the deep-research layer.\n\n## Fields and dates\n\n- Event ids are stable and scheme-prefixed (nih:, 510k:, pma:), so the\n same record re-read on a later day is the same event.\n- Each event carries two dates: its own date from the source, and the\n observed date, which is when the event entered this archive.\n Registries publish on varying lags and the archive was seeded with\n history, so the two can differ widely; the event's own date is the\n authoritative one.\n- amount_usd appears only when the source states a dollar figure.\n Nothing is estimated or summed.\n- NIH award numbers are decoded mechanically into award_phase,\n award_year, and new_award (suffix year -01 is new money). Anything\n the number does not state stays absent.\n- FDA events carry a browser URL (source_url) and a machine-fetchable\n api.fda.gov URL (source_url_api), because accessdata.fda.gov rejects\n non-browser user agents.\n\n## Windows and caps\n\n- signals-latest.json: the last 14 days.\n- Company lookups (micro_brief, company_timeline, and the /v1/company\n routes): 100 per caller per day, and\n 2000 across all free callers per\n day.\n- find_signals searches the whole archive and does not count as a\n company lookup.\n- Every free call, the cheap ones included, counts against a ceiling of\n 600 per caller per day. It is far above a real\n reader's day and exists to bound one caller's cost, not to ration.\n\n## What these files exclude\n\n- Bulk history: the feed files here are a rolling window. The archive\n behind them is searchable free a query at a time (find_signals) and a\n company at a time (micro_brief, company_timeline) under the caps\n above; the complete archive as one file is signals-archive.json on\n the worker, priced by the x402 catalogue.\n- Contact details: see People above. Names as a registry states them,\n never a route to reach someone.\n- Web finds: only government-registry events are published. Facts from\n articles and other web sources are held to a different verification\n standard and stay out.\n- Judgments: no fit assessments, no matching, and no computed ratings\n of any kind. These files carry events and dates only. What they mean\n for a particular firm is the work of the paid layer, where matching\n runs against a stated capability profile, or of an engagement.\n\nFree to cite with attribution to Whimbrel Research (whimbrelresearch.com). Events\ncarry the people the registry itself names in the record, with no\ncontact details; see /methodology.md.\n\nThe archive behind these files tracks 8563 US medtech companies and\nruns back years. The files here are a rolling 14-day window.\nThe complete archive is available two ways: queryable free, a company\nor a search at a time, over MCP and HTTP below, or as one file at\nhttps://data.whimbrelresearch.com/signals-archive.json, priced by the x402 catalogue at\nhttps://data.whimbrelresearch.com/.well-known/x402.\n\n## Files\n\n- /index.json: manifest of every file here, with schema version,\n license, and next-update time.\n- /signals-latest.json: events observed in the last 14 days.\n Each event carries a stable id, company name, kind, event date,\n observed date, amount_usd where a source states a figure, a one-line\n summary, the source URL, and any people the registry names.\n Updated daily.\n- /stats.json: aggregate history (weekly counts and stated dollars for\n the trailing quarter) and archive scale. Aggregates only.\n- https://data.whimbrelresearch.com/signals-archive.json: the complete archive as one\n file, same event schema as signals-latest.json. Served by the worker\n and priced by the x402 catalogue; not mirrored on the free static\n host. Updated daily.\n- /methodology.md: how the data is collected, dated, and windowed, what\n it holds about people, and what these files exclude.\n\n## MCP server\n\nThe same data is queryable over the Model Context Protocol\n(Streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in). Connecting shows a sign-in\npage. Choose Continue with free access. HTTP routes below need no\nkey.\n\nhttps://data.whimbrelresearch.com\n\nClients without OAuth support can read the same data over the\nGET /v1/* HTTP routes instead.\n\nFree tools:\n\nlatest_signals, signal_of_the_day, weekly_pulse, who_got_funded,\nfind_signals, micro_brief, company_timeline, about_the_data,\nget_access\n\nA first call after connect is signal_of_the_day or who_got_funded.\nlatest_signals is the 14-day window, filterable by kind.\nweekly_pulse counts that window by kind. Both include\nClinicalTrials.gov device trial registrations, Breakthrough\nmarketing authorizations, and HDE approvals. find_signals searches\nthe whole archive by kind, date, text, amount, and NIH phase,\nincluding the full trial-registration history, Breakthrough\nmarketing authorizations, and HDE approvals. who_got_funded\nreturns NIH awards from the window. After that first call, ask\nweekly_pulse or latest_signals. If a Breakthrough manufacturer\nshows up, several events can name the same manufacturer.\nAsk for one full company brief on that company, not once per event.\nTo subscribe, call get_access from a connected client.\nmicro_brief is a composed\nmini-dossier on any company in the archive and company_timeline is\nthe structured version of the same, including that company's full\ntrial-registration history, Breakthrough marketing\nauthorizations, and HDE approvals; those two are capped at\n100 company lookups per caller per day.\nsignal_of_the_day is the newest event, and about_the_data returns\nthis document.\n\nThe server also publishes seven ready-made prompts, named with a\nwhimbrel_ prefix (whimbrel_micro_brief, whimbrel_latest_signals, ...), so\nclients that surface prompts as slash commands get a command palette on\nconnect.\n\n## HTTP API\n\nThe same handlers answer GET at the same origin, for readers that do\nnot speak MCP:\n\n- /v1/signals/latest: the last 14 days of signals, filterable by kind, including ClinicalTrials.gov device trial registrations, Breakthrough marketing authorizations, and HDE approvals\n- /v1/signals/search: search the whole archive, including trial registrations, Breakthrough marketing authorizations, and HDE approvals\n- /v1/signals/funded: the window filtered for NIH awards\n- /v1/signals/today: the newest single signal\n- /v1/pulse: seven-day aggregates, including device trial registrations, Breakthrough marketing authorizations, and HDE approvals\n- /v1/company/{company}: every registry event for one company, including trial registrations, Breakthrough marketing authorizations, and HDE approvals\n- /v1/company/{company}/brief: a composed mini-dossier, as markdown\n\n/v1/subscribe?plan=<name> redirects to that plan's Stripe checkout, and\n/v1/key/<checkout-session-id> hands over the resulting API key once. With\nno plan named, /v1/subscribe sends a human to the setup page instead:\nsubscribing from inside a connected client hands the key to the app and\nnever displays one.\n\nDiscovery and terms are free and always will be: https://data.whimbrelresearch.com/.well-known/x402\ncarries the machine-readable catalogue of routes, prices, and whether\npayment is currently on, and https://data.whimbrelresearch.com/v1/about carries the terms in prose.\nThe catalogue is the authority on price; do not cache a number from\nthis file.\n\n## The paid layer\n\nA Whimbrel key unlocks the same server's remaining tools:\n\ndeep_record, research_status, crm_export, billing_portal\n\nA full company brief runs the research pipeline on Whimbrel's\ninfrastructure for any company you name: current leadership, contact\nroutes, funding and milestones read from the company's own site and\npress, every line quoted from the source it came from. research_status\ntracks a queued run and reports the month's remaining allowance.\ncrm_export shapes a finished research record into ready-to-import\nHubSpot or Salesforce files: a companies CSV, a contacts CSV, a sourced\nnotes document, and the import steps.\n\nThe plans differ in one thing only, how many companies you can research\nin a month, and everything in the archive above stays free on all of\nthem. Run out mid-month and a run pack adds to that month.\n\nWhimbrel does not judge fit for you. A record is verified public facts\nwith no opinion about whether the company suits your firm; that call is\nyours, and the AI you are reading this through is better placed to make\nit than a server is. Firms that want the targeting done for them, by a\nperson, are the limited research help below.\n\nTo get a key, call get_access, which is free and needs no key, open the\ncheckout link for the plan you want, and the page you land on shows an\nAPI key once. Send that key as an Authorization Bearer header.\nbilling_portal returns the Stripe portal for card changes, plan changes\nand cancellation.\n\n## Limited research help\n\nEverything above is self-serve. For a handful of medical device\nengineering firms, Whimbrel does all the research: tell us what you\nwant and we research it, and a continuous watch on these same\nregistries flags new companies that fit what the firm builds. A person\nreviews everything before it goes out.
